A Man Can’t Just Sit Around!

One of the subtle deceptions of the F&I profession is the constant “busy” state we find ourselves in. Dozens of tasks demand our attention when we are not with a customer. Days, weeks and months go by and we find ourselves regretting the fact that we have never got around to those efforts to consistently grow our knowledge and skills. To stay on top we must have an intentional effort and schedule to make that happen!

Larry Walters wanted to fly. He filled 45 weather balloons with helium and tied them to his lawn chair. Larry planned to fly up to 30 feet above his backyard, where he would enjoy a few hours of flight before coming down. Instead, he climbed to 16,000 feet.

We don’t need to sit around and wait for growth to happen. Waiting for some “free time” to follow through on our commitment to stay on top of our profession is not a plan for success.

He shot a few balloons and slowly descended until he got caught on a power line, blacking out a 20-mile area of Long Beach, Calif. He was arrested by waiting members of the Los Angeles Police Department. A reporter asked him why he had done it. Larry replied , “A man just can’t sit around.”

We don’t need to sit around and wait for growth to happen. Waiting for some “free time” to follow through on our commitment to stay on top of our profession is not a plan for success. Substantial growth in any area only happens when we adjust/change something we do every day.

Intentionally scheduling 20-30 minutes daily for growth activities will do much more than waiting for a break in the action! So do it today. Don’t be like Larry and try and fix months of the ‘busy” diversion in one day. Do it every day and I’ll see you at the top!
